The Compliance Layer

The EU restricts hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) in skin-contact leather. Under REACH Annex XVII entry 47, such leather may not be sold at 3 mg/kg or more of Cr(VI) by total dry weight, tested with ISO 17075. Chromium tanning is allowed; the risk is that trivalent chromium oxidizes into the restricted form during storage, so testing, not a supplier declaration, is the only proof.
